New Mocha con Choco from Caffe Latte

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Actually, it’s just the color of the cup has changed. It used to be green; now it’s brown! Only I with my unique expertise in Caffe Latte packaging would notice. ;)

New Mocha con Choco cup from Caffe Latte

매일 카페라떼모카 콘 초코 = Maeil Caffé Latte Mocha con Choco

Comes with a brown-tinted translucent plastic cover and brown green straw in transparent plastic sleeve that was glued to cup with golden foil lid.

Aside from the color, the Italian-themed cartoon people on the bottom half of the cup have been replaced with live, ethnically ambiguous models. Yeah, I guess this is a design improvement.

Yet the misspellings remain! Recommand [sic] used [sic] by date lid.

Same instructions: Do not use in microwave. Keep refrigerated. Though cups are being sold at room temperature… Maybe they mean refrigerate after opening.

The taste, I must admit, is still unremarkable. I can’t even tell the different variants of Caffe Latte apart. Ingredients the same:

Water, espresso coffee extract, whole milk powder, granulated sugar, Colombia coffee extract, cocoa powder, sodium bicarbonate, sucrose esters of fatty acids, cocoa mass, flavor, carrageenan

Slight change in Nutrition Facts. No more trans fat. 1 serving is 200 milliliters. 105 calories per serving, 30 calories from fat. 3 grams of total fat, 2 grams saturated. 12 mg of cholesterol. 100 mg of sodium. 17 grams of total carbohydrates. no dietary fiber, 16 grams of sugars. 3 grams of protein. Calcium content is 8% of DV.

UPC Bar Code 7 65444 10633 5. Manufactured by Maeil Dairies. Product of Korea.

The label on the cup is also translated into French. Nothing in hangul, so this must be purposely made for the American market. With CA CRV printed on the cup.

HK Supermarket had them on sale at 99 cents with $0.05 crv.

Korean Rice Crackers

오색찹쌀유과 Le Biscuit Sec Coréen de Riz. Yukwa! 油菓

Colorful Korean Rice Crackers

That’s what the English label says — Korean Rice Cracker. It’s a hangwa (한과, traditional Korean snack) called yoogwa (유과). To make it, Koreans use rice flour to form a dough into these stubby fingerlings, which are then deep fried in oil. Airy and crunchy inside.

The hangeul label identifies the product as 오색유과 (osaek yugwa). O-saek means five colors. The flavors or variants listed on the package are 백년초 (cactus), 쑥 (mugwort), 콩 (bean), 유자 (yuja, a citrus fruit) and 연유과 (lotus).

Surasang (수라상) is the brand. Net Weight: 170 grams (6 ounces). Available at HK Supermarket on Western Avenue.

Carmen Trutanich Wins City Attorney Election

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

The Asian American Action Fund (AAAF) supported Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich in his run for the office of Los Angeles City Attorney because of his opposition to the gerrymandering of Koreatown, which had been divided into four council districts. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) comprise one-seventh of the city’s population, yet have had no representative on the City Council since 1989.

Campaign Sign for Trutanich
Photo taken in May 2009 in front of HK Supermarket on the corner of Western Avenue and First Street in Wilshire Center, north of Koreatown.

Carmen Trutanich narrowly defeated veteran Councilman Jack Weiss in a bitter race. Weiss is 44 and has been a member of the City Council for eight years representing parts of the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles. Trutanich is 57 and a private attorney; he is the son of Croatian and Italian immigrants. One of his campaign pledges was to work for every community to be treated fairly during the 2011 redistricting process.
