The 2009 Los Angeles Marathon race course passed in front of Korean restaurant Tahoe Galbi on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Wilton Place.

Address: 3986 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90010

I’ve also seen this restaurant’s Korean name transliterated into English as four separate syllables: Ta Hoe Gal Bee.

AYCE = all you can eat ;) Yes, they have bulgogi. :D

TBBC Barbecue serves Buldak Fire Chicken

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

TBBC Barbecue (티비비씨 바베큐) is a bul-dalk (불닭 = “fire chicken”) restaurant on Western Avenue. Buldalk, also spelled in English as buldak or puldak, is a Korean food fad of the last decade in which chicken pieces like drumsticks are very heavily spiced with red-pepper powder. The “fire” refers to how hot and spicy the chicken is.

TBBC grills the chicken pieces over charcoal and then smothers them with barbecue sauce. Also serves herb chicken, wings and french fries. Take-out available.

The acronym TBBC stands for Top Brand Best Corporation, according to the CEO. It’s a restaurant chain in South Korea.

Todamgol Korean BBQ Restaurant

Friday, April 24th, 2009

If only this restaurant didn’t allow smoking, I’d go and try the 재주산 똥돼지 — pork from the Cheju Island black pigs, traditionally living off from under the household’s latrine/privy/bathroom. (Does the US government allow the meat to be imported?)

The reason the place is still closed in the picture is that they don’t open until 4 PM. They close at around midnight.

Other Korean dishes in addition to 삼겹살 (samgyeopsal = fatty slices of pork): 아구전골 (monkfish stew), 굴보쌈 (cabbage-wrapped oysters), 깻잎+고추전 (sesame laves with red peppers), 낙지 (octopus)

Soju and beer to go with the barbecued meat.

A murder-suicide occurred here on May 22, 2007. The owner was shot dead by a man, who then shot himself. It was a love triangle involving the killer’s wife.

New management since then, but in September 2008 a diner found a band-aid in his soup.
