KOREATOWN’S CHARITY EVENT OF THE YEAR AT RFK SCHOOLS

Korea Daily, the country’s largest Korean-language newspaper, is holding its annual charity festival on December 11 and 12 on the grounds of the new Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools in Koreatown.

The event will feature a bazaar where businesses as well as families can sell their wares for the benefit of charity; live stage performances with both traditional Korean and urban American entertainment; activities for children and their families; and the iconic food trucks of Los Angeles.

The organization that Korea Daily has set up to directly manage and benefit from the event is the Korean American Volunteer Corps (KAVC), a group that has been helping minority communities through various programs since 2001. The hallmark event of KAVC is the charity festival they hold every year that is the largest such event in Koreatown.

This year, the festival is for two days, Saturday and Sunday, and will be from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Also distinctive this year is the participation of food trucks, including Komodo, The Sweets Truck, India Jones Chow Truck, Mighty Boba, The Place LA, Kogi™ and KO Tacos.

Further excitement is provided by the venue, which is the wide, inviting space at the newly opened Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools in Koreatown.  Located at 701 South Catalina Street, the complex of schools was designed for 4200 students, many of whom will be attending the KAVC festival.

More details and the full press release in English will be released in the coming days. For questions: email CharityEvent2010@visitkoreatown.org

NaturaBar Extending it for Koreatown!

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

If you missed the news on Twitter and Facebook, let it be known that the unique Oaxacan juicery NaturaBar has extended its sponsorship of @Koreatown for another two weeks!

Hurray for the Spanish-speaking part of our neighborhood. Sometimes, one wonders why it’s called Koreatown when the majority of residents have always been hispanohablantes, but that’s another story.

Fruit Cocktail at Natura Bar

After soft-launching on July 3 with shorter hours, Natura Bar has found a regular rhythm, now opening at 7:00 am and closing at 8:00 pm everyday. The menus have been fine-tuned and they’ve added a community blackboard that has been popular with the Twitterati who are among the most loyal customers.

Natura Bar's Community Blackboard @NaturaBar on Twitter!
The board was made by Natura Bar manager and co-owner Fernando Lopez himself, and after two weeks, it’s so chock-full that he says the board will be erased soon to make room for new messages.

Make sure to see for yourself what all the buzz is about. These menu offerings are natural if not organic. No sugar added; only organic honey from bees in Jalisco!

Thanks by the way to Fernando’s sister and business partner Bricia Lopez who answers most of my questions! And thanks to their Natura Bar for sponsoring the Koreatown Twitter account for most of July. The support gives a vital boost to a social-media channel that serves the most vibrant district of Los Angeles. Check it:  twitter.com/koreatown ~
