Aio Coffee Shop in Koreatown

Aio Coffee Shop in Koreatown

I’ve always passed by this strip mall on 6th Street and thought it was AJO.

Nope, it’s AIO Coffee Shop.

The sign is actually not a blackboard, but a lighted contraption that blinks.

I caught it when it was flashing green, then pink. Cool ~

Mr Coffee in Koreatown Has Closed

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Rainy day in Koreatown, though there was a break in the late afternoon when the sun even came out. Passed by the strip mall on 6th and Western to check up on Yogo Zone when I noticed that Mr. Coffee was shuttered.

Mr Coffee in Koreatown has closed.

Asked a Korean woman who seemed to be a worker in the area and she said that, yeah, she had heard that Mr. Coffee had gone out of business. Shocker!

I went over to the door where there was a sign with faded writing. Could barely make it out. It said something like: “From January 4th, Mr. Coffee will be closed. Thank you so much for your patronage all those years.”

This is the same strip mall where Caketown Garden closed in October. That retail space is still empty. If you’re interested, the number is (323) 663-3232. I didn’t notice any for-lease sign at Mr. Coffee.

Just last week, I saw an eviction notice at the cleaners about three blocks north on the same side of Western Avenue.

Yogo Zone seems to be surviving, what with free wi-fi and novel offerings almost every week… Meanwhile, Iceberry at the car wash also about three blocks north of the same side of the street has come under new management.

Solair Wilshire across 6th Street on Western Avenue has openings lined up. In fact, Reboot Style has already soft-launched and will have its grand opening in February, as will Aroma Cafe next to it. Hair Day on the floor above will open next week. Around the corner on the same ground floor of the Solair, Frutation by Edible Arrangements opened last week. Cindy Cho’s Aveda Salon has been open since October.

Customer traffic? Well, that’s another story…

Banchan A La Carte on Western Avenue

Friday, April 24th, 2009

반찬 아라까르떼 (Banchan A La Carte) is surrounded by dingy establishments on Western Avenue, but it’s a pretty upscale place that serves Korean and pan-Asian fusion dishes without MSG or other preservatives. It is owned by famous Korean chef Jayne Chang who founded the California Premier Culinary School in Los Angeles.

Banchan A La Carte in Koreatown

Banchan A La Carte opened in 2007 as a Korean sort of Whole Foods or Famima with a tiny patio garden. The banchan (sides for authentic Korean meals) are relatively expensive because of the organic, local ingredients used — if you don’t mind mass-produced ingredients, get your banchan across the street at HK Supermarket.

Different types of organic coffee are served at the cafe. Lunch boxes can be picked up Mondays to Fridays from 11: 30 am to 2:30 pm. Price: under $9 – 12. Soups and sandwiches. Meals served on site. Bibimbap from $8. Pasta dishes $9-$12. Catering for parties and weddings is a big part of the business at $35 per plate. Credit cards accepted.

Address: 141 North Western Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90004
Between 1st Street and Beverly Boulevard.
Phone number: (323) 465-2400. Parking not a problem.
