2010 Korean Festival Parade in Koreatown LA

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

It’s the 37th annual Korean Festival in Los Angeles! The highlight was supposed to be the Koreatown Parade along Olympic Boulevard on Saturday. Most agreed that it was boring compared to last year. The pace was slow, the performers were listless, and they still had the same old fogy doing the English commentary.

An unpleasantly corpulent city councilman biked along the route waving to a crowd that was yelling expletives at him over how he chopped up Koreatown — the same geezer trying to restrict the universally loved food trucks of LA.

There were marching bands from different high schools; the South Korean national taekwondo team broke plywood; a judo club and a wushu group had exhibitions; the Salvadoran community was represented; Korean Air had a float; Hyundai ran a couple of their new vehicle models; Wilshire Private School had a contingent… The Johnny Hi Steppers drill team and drum squad were the most energetic performers.

Among the traditional performances were the scissors dance and the mudang dance. A group of cute girls dancing in Korean costume with fans were the crowd favorites.

The festival runs September 30 (Thursday) to October 3 (Sunday) at Seoul International Park, near Olympic Boulevard, cross street Irolo.
