Carmen Trutanich Wins City Attorney Election

The Asian American Action Fund (AAAF) supported Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich in his run for the office of Los Angeles City Attorney because of his opposition to the gerrymandering of Koreatown, which had been divided into four council districts. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) comprise one-seventh of the city’s population, yet have had no representative on the City Council since 1989.

Carmen Trutanich narrowly defeated veteran Councilman Jack Weiss in a bitter race. Weiss is 44 and has been a member of the City Council for eight years representing parts of the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles. Trutanich is 57 and a private attorney; he is the son of Croatian and Italian immigrants. One of his campaign pledges was to work for every community to be treated fairly during the 2011 redistricting process.
